Truecaller adds AI-powered spam blocking feature for Android users

Android premium users of the Swedish caller identification software Truecaller can now reject any calls that are not from authorised contacts or that the app's artificial intelligence (AI) technology deems to be spam.

Update
As per TechCrunch, Truecaller's 'Max' update prohibits spam calls even if they are not included in its database. According to the study, the company used to permit blocking or other restrictive actions depending on the way numbers were listed in its database.

Subscription
In India, the starting price for Truecaller's premium plan is Rs. 75 per month, or Rs. 529 annually. Only Android users can use the spam-blocking update for Truecaller. Apple prohibits the automatic barring of calls on iPhones by apps such as Truecaller, which identify spam.

In an effort to draw more customers to its premium subscription, the company is working to improve its screening technology. Additionally, it hopes to capitalize on the commercial opportunity created by individuals becoming agitated by the constant barrage of scammers and spam calls.

For Premium Users
The business stated in February that its AI-powered call recording tool, which provides transcription and call summary, would be available in India. For Truecaller Premium subscribers, AI call recording is accessible. According to the company, Truecaller's usage of AI technology enables users to participate fully in real-time conversations without worrying about taking thorough notes, which boosts productivity when on the phone.

Trustchecker
In October, ET revealed that Truecaller had purchased Bengaluru-based Unoideo Technologies, the company behind TrustCheckr, a fraud detection service, in an effort to boost its AI products in the Indian market. Through its software-as-a-service (SaaS) platform, TrustChecker assists companies in validating consumer data and identifying fraud risk by utilising digital signals and phone numbers. Among its clients are Piramal Capital & Housing Finance and IIFL Finance Ltd.

Since its introduction in 2009, Truecaller has amassed over a billion downloads and 356 million active users. The business claims that as of 2021, the platform had detected and stopped close to 50 billion unsolicited calls.
