A small submachine gun called the FN P90 was created by FN Herstal, a Belgian armaments company. It is distinguished by its bullpup configuration, unusual horizontally mounted magazine, and striking styling. Law enforcement and military organisations all around the world frequently use the P90.
Design
The action and magazine of the P90 are positioned behind the trigger group due to its bullpup construction. This preserves the conventional barrel length but permits a shorter overall length. With controls and ejection ports on both sides of the gun, the P90 is made to be ambidextrous. Because of this, shooters who are right- or left-handed can utilise it. The ergonomic design of the P90 is well-known; it includes a forward handguard with integrated accessory rails for accessories such as optical sights and a comfortable grip.
Performance
The P90 is useful in close-quarters combat because of its fast cyclic rate of fire. Good accuracy is a result of its ergonomics and design, particularly in close-quarters confrontations. The P90 is chambered for the 5.7x28mm round, which is intended to provide superior penetration over conventional handgun rounds when it comes to stopping body armor. The weapon's compactness is maintained while a larger round capacity is made possible by the top-mounted horizontal magazine design.
Features
The action and magazine of the pistol are positioned behind the trigger group in a bullpup layout. While keeping the barrel length constant, this design helps to reduce the total length. The P90 makes use of a unique magazine that is positioned horizontally on top of the gun. This design maintains the weapon's compactness while enabling a larger magazine capacity. Both right- and left-handed shooters can use the P90's ambidextrous controls, which include magazine release, safety/fire selector buttons, and ejection ports on both sides of the weapon.
Safety
The safety and fire selector switches on P90s are usually ambidextrous, enabling the shooter to operate the weapon's safety from either side. Trigger safety features are included in several P90 variants. In order to prevent inadvertent discharges in the event that the trigger is accidentally touched or snagged, this forces the shooter to purposefully squeeze the trigger. A decocking lever, which certain models may include, enables the user to securely decock the gun without firing a cartridge from the chamber.
Pros
- Compact Design: The bullpup shape makes it manoeuvrable in small settings by allowing for a shorter overall length while keeping a standard barrel length.
- High Magazine Capacity: The horizontal magazine design located at the top of the rifle permits a comparatively large round capacity without appreciably enlarging its overall dimensions.
Cons
- Limited Effective Range: Compared to rifles with longer barrels, the P90 may be less effective at extended ranges, even though it is appropriate for close to medium-range encounters.
- Complexity of Maintenance: Disassembly and maintenance of bullpup designs can occasionally be more difficult than those of conventional handgun designs.
Variants
- FN P90: Depending on the needs of the user, the tactical model may have a Picatinny rail on top for mounting optics and other attachments.
- FN PS90: Designed for the civilian market, the semi-automatic PS90 is the P90's civilian equivalent. Usually, it has a longer barrel in order to meet regulatory standards.
- FN P90 TR: To increase versatility, the Triple Rail model has extra attachment rails on the sides of the rifle to attach more equipment.
